Whether you are a seasoned veteran of the road or just starting your career in commercial driving, understanding the DOT physical is essential to your success and safety.

What is a DOT Physical?

A DOT physical is a health examination mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Its primary goal is to ensure that highly demanding commercial vehicle operations are handled by drivers who are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to operate safely. Because commercial drivers often spend long hours behind the wheel of large vehicles, these exams are a critical component of public road safety.

Who Needs One?

If you operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) and receive compensation for it, you likely need a DOT physical. This includes drivers who:

• Operate vehicles with a gross weight of over 10,001 pounds.
• Transport more than 15 passengers (or more than 8 for compensation).
• Transport hazardous materials that require placarding.

How long is the certificate valid?

Most Medical Examiner’s Certificates are valid for 24 months. However, if you have certain health conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, your provider may issue a certificate for a shorter duration (e.g., 3, 6, or 12 months) to ensure regular monitoring.

What to Expect During the Exam

The exam is straightforward but thorough. Your provider will review your medical history and perform a physical examination that includes:

• Vision & Hearing: Ensuring you can see and hear well enough to respond to road hazards.
• Blood Pressure: Checking for hypertension that could pose a risk while driving.
• Urinalysis: A basic screen for underlying medical conditions like diabetes or kidney issues.
• Physical Assessment: Checking neurological reflexes, lung health, and overall physical agility.
